Engineering News-Record and Architectural Record Each Win 2002 Jesse H. Neal Awards

McGraw-Hill Construction Information Group Publications Recognized for Editorial Excellence in Business Journalism

McGRAW-HILL CONSTRUCTION IS LAUNCHED AT AMERICAN INSTITUTE OF ARCHITECTS 2002 ANNUAL CONVENTION AND EXPO

Re-branding Will Connect People, Projects and Products

NEW YORK, N.Y., May 9, 2002 - McGraw-Hill Construction, part of the McGraw-Hill Companies (NYSE:MHP) today unveiled the "new" McGraw-Hill Construction at the American Institute of Architects (AIA) 2002 Annual Convention and Expo in Charlotte, North Carolina. The newly branded group of leading construction information companies and publications - Dodge, Sweets, Architectural Record, Engineering News-Record, Regional Publications and construction.com - was launched through an integrated program on and off the trade show floor.

"McGraw-Hill Construction connects the leading information and intelligence of the construction industry under one name," observed its president, Norbert W. Young, Jr., FAIA. "Our re-branding is much more than a name change - it's a commitment to serve our customers and the industry better. It's a dedication by our business units to collaborate so it's easy for our customers to receive the solutions they need from us. By better connecting people, projects and products, McGraw-Hill Construction will advance its leadership role and set new standards for the global construction industry."

McGraw-Hill Construction serves more than one million customers within the $3.4 trillion global construction community, including architects, engineers, contractors, specialty subcontractors, building owners, building product manufacturers, distributors and service providers. Based on significant customer research, in the form of focus groups and online surveys, customers of the individual business units - Dodge, Sweets and Architectural Record - reported not knowing that they were connected, and were part of The McGraw-Hill Companies, a company perceived to have high integrity. And, they expressed an eagerness to learn more about the offerings of the other sister businesses.

"The construction industry is vast and complex," observed Mr. Young. "Players are under significant budget and time constraints as they sort through information, strategize, plan, program, design, bid, build, produce and maintain - while simultaneously trying to keep the inspiration of original ideas burning brightly. Our transformation makes it easier for them to get the solutions they need. And increased collaboration, such as publication of a special section titled "Building for a Secure Future" by Architectural Record and ENR, benefits readers with joint editorial coverage and advertisers from increased circulation."

Recognizing the importance of communicating the re-branding effort, a comprehensive program was developed. The AIA convention was chosen to unveil the new McGraw-Hill Construction brand, because it attracts some 18,000 construction industry professionals, including many of its existing customers. Indeed, Architectural Record is the official magazine of the AIA. Prior to the convention, a five (5) city tour by senior management took place to inform and discuss the transformation with all employees. At the show, a comprehensive branding program was launched to develop awareness and understanding of the new brand. Components include an award breakfast; sponsorship of speakers and continuing education; a number of branding programs around the show, and a newly designed booth, strategically located at the show's entrance. Complementing these activities, ads announcing the re-branding effort have been placed in several publications.

"In sum," concluded President Young, "McGraw-Hill Construction's mission is to bring clarity and simplicity to our industry and lead as we always have, with the best information, intelligence and applications available. Our vision is to transform the global construction industry by setting the standard through connecting people, projects and products."
